Israel is the first country in the Middle East to put together what’s called a “green map.” This map shows where all environmental and social sites, activities, and projects are located. It allows both visitors and residents of Jerusalem to live in a sustainable way by making it easier to know where to receive green services and products.

Arava Institute (Standard Definition)

Learn about the Arava institute, an educational research institution at Ben Gurion University in Israel, where nature and hope know no borders. Coexistence begins with meaningful collaboration according to the educators and students at Arava. They speak a language of trust and come together under a common goal: to save the environment. Jews, Muslims, Christians, Arabs, Palestinians, and Israelis all come together under the umbrella of the Arava institute. The institute is committed to this cross-border education because they realize that what happens in Israel, affects the countries and communities around them. They work on a regional cooperative basis to combat environmental issues. Their alumni have made a difference in regional dialogue surrounding the issues of environment, energy, and water. Learn about the PELS Baum Peace-building and Environmental Leadership seminar in which students, in a non-credit, required program, discuss the most controversial political and religious issues and learn how to work together regardless of their difference in opinion. AAPEN is the Arava Alumni Peace and Environmental Network where they emphasis the importance of continuing the collaboration between alumni, bringing together Israelis and Jordanians, Muslims and Jews, in a variety of important projects.

Green Course Says no to 3rd Coal Power Plant

Israel participates in an ongoing domestic debate over the use of Coal powered plants. Learn about the opposition that formed as result of Israel’s plans to build a third coal plant in the city of Ashkelon.  The group “Green Course” helps to lead these opposition efforts.

Volunteer Abroad-GoEco on Channel 10 News

An Israeli organization allows young people to travel cheaply, experience incredibly diverse cultures, and help people all over the world. This program has individuals work in communities around the globe in areas of wildlife, community, and environmental projects. Watch as a couple from Israel volunteers at an orphanage in Mongolia. These individuals prefer spending their vacation working on projects that help the world rather than sitting on a beach in Turkey. Hear from them about why that is.

The Dream Doctors Project

The Dream Doctors Project is an Israeli program that trains “medical clowns” to help in pediatric wards around the country. These medical clowns have become an integral part of a hospital’s staff and are truly helping children who are hospitalized.

The Gifts Project is a website that allows various friends and family members to “chip in” and buy a gift. This means an easy, efficient, and inexpensive way to buy friends the gifts they really want. Based in Tel Aviv, the project won at the TechAviv conference held in New York in 2010.

They serve the Israeli population and the world at large by providing funding and a vision for communities and foundations that provide for various development, research, and outreach sectors. From a theater troupe for Ethiopian immigrants to scientific research to helping disabled children excel, The Arison Foundation is helping individuals and communities live a better life. They believe in the ability of each person to make a difference and thanks to their commitment and funding, many wonderful projects have had great success.
